BlueStacks beta-1 [Android App Review]
[info]okycos

Angry Birds Space via BlueStacks beta-1

BlueStacks has been around for a while. We first saw it in an early alpha, that while usable, wasn't ready for prime time. After lots of toiling and hard work (I assume), we finally saw BlueStacks enter beta, and boy, was this ever a different program.

So what exactly does BlueStacks let you do? It lets you run Android applications right on your PC, just as though you were using an Android phone or tablet. It manages to pull this off using some sort of black voodoo neckbeard magic? "Layercake" technology the guys have developed, and man oh man, do I like it.

Getting BlueStacks going is simply a breeze. Once you've got it all installed, you simply open it up and there's a list of preinstalled apps. You have access to a couple of different app stores to download other apps you might want, and to top it all off, you can install apk's directly into BlueStacks, right off of your computer's hard drive.

(There's also an app syncing tool that lets you sync apps from your phone to your computer's client, which skirts the whole apk issue, but just know that it's there if you need it.)

When you've finally got an app loaded up in BlueStacks, there's always a bit of experimenting to see what button or mouse click controls what. For something like Angry Birds Space, it's all pretty straightforward; use your mouse like you'd use your finger.

For something more complex (and visually demanding) like Shadowgun, you've just got to mess around. For the most part, mouse clicks transfer pretty well, and more often than not, arrow keys will move your character. The few times I ran Shadowgun, it was either kind of stuttery or buttery smooth, so your mileage can definitely vary.

Overall, BlueStacks is pretty darn cool, especially if you've ever wanted to get the Android experience on your computer. Its uses might seem a bit novel right now, but as prices for games in the mobile space continue to come in lower than their desktop counterparts, BlueStacks looks like it could offer some market disruption.

You can download the BlueStacks Windows component from the BlueStacks website at no cost. We've got video after the break.

What You Are Expected To Bring To A Relationship | Black and ...
[info]okycos

Marriage

by BMWK Staff ?|? on May 23rd, 2012 ?|?

by Grace Pamer

We all enter relationships with many expectations from the other person. As a couple passes through the milestones and natural stages of their life together, these may change and some may come to be more important than others. But one thing is for certain: if your expectations are not met, and in fact become disappointments, your romance is in trouble.

Just as each of us has a set of expectations in such a situation, we should recognize that our partner holds expectations as well. And while many of these will be the same as your expectations, some may be different, more personal and specific. But as a general rule, there is a set of expectations that any potential partner will have of you, and it?s a good idea to get to know them, for your own peace of mind and for the future on any relationship you might be in.

Consideration
This a word that gets used a lot, but we rarely stop to think about what it really means. If you have real and true consideration for your lover, you are putting his or her needs first, before your own. You are always thinking about what the impact and consequences of your actions, words, and behaviors might be on him or her, and acting accordingly. You master impulsive behavior because you don?t want to cause pain or discomfort to your partner by anything you say or do. And when it is necessary for you to express your own needs, you do it in such a way that he or she feels that you are being positive, and not being critical. You are expected to be considerate.

Compassion
This is another overused word that sometimes seems to apply to everyone but the two people in a relationship. True compassion is a state of mind that allows one person to feel what the other is feeling, or at least to be able to use some imagination and get close to it. The practice of forgiveness follows from having compassion, because you realize that everyone makes mistakes or has life events that can?t be changed, and everyone needs to be forgiven. Tolerance is also a necessary part of compassion, because you must allow for differences and overlook them when they cause problems. You are expected to be compassionate.

Comprehension
Another way of saying that you are expected to be understanding, having comprehension also includes the idea of being a thoughtful and rational person in a relationship. There is a place for passion and romance of course, but these should never overpower the application of thought to a situation. Your partner needs you to be able to feel emotion, but to use rational thinking as well when it is needed. Understanding comes from taking in all aspects of an event and then thinking about it, asking questions, and finally seeing the truth. Your lover will expect you to comprehend, not just understand.

Commitment
Perhaps the most important of the expectations your partner has for you, commitment is what makes all the other attributes meaningful. Loyalty and trust are expected to be a vital part of a serious relationship from the beginning, and without them there can be no promise of a future, no promise of continued love, no promise of absolute fidelity. You will be expected to have a sense of commitment to your partner.

A successful relationship happens when the expectations of each person in it are met or exceeded. As time goes by, these will become accepted as given, and trust can develop along with love and romance.

InFocus IN1126
[info]okycos

The InFocus IN1126 ($1,099 direct) is a compact and very light?yet?bright data projectors geared to business travelers who need to frequently make presentations to small groups. Although it's highly portable, you do need bring your computer or other input source to run presentations from as there's no port for a USB thumb drive. Its image quality is fine for typical data presentations.

The IN1126 is rated at 3,000 lumens of brightness. It has native WXGA (1,280 by 800) resolution, compatible with widescreen laptops with a 16:10 aspect ratio. It measures 2.8 by 8.6 by 7 inches (HWD) and weighs 3.4 pounds. This black and boxy projector has both zoom and focus wheels; it was easy enough to bring it to a fairly sharp focus quickly.

The projector is identical in appearance, dimensions, and features to the InFocus IN1124 ($975 direct, 3.5 stars), except that the IN1124's native resolution is limited to XGA (1,024 by 768 pixels). The Editors' Epson PowerLite 1775W Multimedia Projector ($1,199 direct, 4 stars) has WXGA resolution; it's wider but considerably thinner than the IN1126, and weighs slightly more.

The IN1126 packs a typical selection of ports for an ultraportable projector: HDMI; S-Video; an RCA jack for composite video; audio-in; VGA; and a USB mini-B port that you can plug into your computer for remote mouse support, allowing you to use the projector's remote control in lieu of the mouse to advance slides and the like.

One port that would have been a useful addition is a USB type A to let you run a computer-free presentation off of a USB thumb drive. Without it, you still have to lug a laptop with you; the projector does come with a soft carrying case for protection.

Performance The IN1126 threw a 6-feet diagonal image on our test screen that stood up well to ambient light with the projector about 10 feet away. In testing with our DisplayMate suite (www.displaymate.com), data image quality was reasonably good, fine for typical business presentations. Some minor color issues showed up: white lines against dark backgrounds tended to look yellowish, and there was some yellow fringing on the right and top edges of the projected images. Colors in general?especially yellows and light blues?looked somewhat darker than they should have, and medium grays looked slightly greenish.

Also, the rainbow effect common with DLP projectors, in which bright areas break up into their component colors when one shifts one's gaze (or, in the case of video, when an object moves), was apparent to me in some test images that tend to bring it out. But unless you're a stickler for accurate color or your content demands it, the IN1126 should be up to the job of showing business presentations while you're on the road.

Video Quality
The IN1126's video quality is adequate for showing fairly short clips as part of a presentation. The projector did reasonably well in retaining detail in both dark and light areas. Colors generally looked fairly true. However, the rainbow effect was more pronounced than with an average DLP projector, and obvious enough to me that people who are sensitive to it probably wouldn't want to watch long videos with this projector.

The IN1126's sound system is more feeble than most. It was barely audible, even when I sat right next to the projector with the volume turned fully up. Though its 1-watt speaker doesn't get the job done, it does have an audio-out jack, so you could connect it to powered external speakers. The InFocus IN1124 has a similarly weak sound system, while the Epson 1775W's was better.

The InFocus In1126 is a solid, capable, and highly portable data projector, well suited to businesspeople that need to make frequent presentations while on the road. It has higher resolution than the similar InFocus IN1124. It's narrower and slightly lighter than (if not as thin as) the Editors' Choice Epson PowerLite 1775W. The Epson 1775W, though, has Wi-Fi connectivity (through an included dongle) and a port for a USB thumb drive. Its still and video image quality both proved very good in our testing, and as an LCD projector it by nature lacks the rainbow effect seen in the IN1126. The IN1126, though, is worthy of being on your short list for an ultra-light data projector.

'It's not really something I would write, so I'm excited to get my own stuff out there,' he tells MTV News.

As has been his M.O. throughout this 11th season of "American Idol," Phillip Phillips wowed the crowd and the judges with his show-stopping final performance of would-be single "Home."

MTV News was lucky enough to chat with Phillips on the red carpet leading up to the big finale Wednesday (May 23), where he revealed a few details about how he wound up choosing the rootsy ballad.

"It wasn't really too much of a process," Phillips admitted with his trademark "aw, shucks" smile. "I got to hear it once and they said, 'Would you like to do it?' "

Obviously, Phillips did want to do that song, a smart decision that led to the evening's only standing ovation from the judges. However, if the Georgia native had to do it all over again, without the strict time constraints they work under on "Idol," Phillips said he would have preferred to have performed his own original song.

"I wanted to do my own stuff, but we only had a certain amount of time to do everything, so I had to do that one, and it's a really good song," he said. "The writers are really good. It's not really something I would write, so I'm excited to get my own stuff out there."

We're sure Phillips' adoring fans are excited to listen to his "stuff" as well. In the meantime they can watch and re-watch the sweet-tempered 21-year-old's final performance, complete with a marching band, to hold them over.

Ryan Crocker, ambassador to Afghanistan, to leave
[info]okycos

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Ryan Crocker, the unflappable diplomat who became the civilian face of America's wars in Iraq and Afghanistan over two administrations, is stepping down as ambassador to Afghanistan and retiring from the U.S. foreign service after a storied tenure in some of the world's most dangerous hotspots.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Tuesday the 62-year-old veteran envoy would leave his post in Kabul this summer because of health reasons she declined to detail.

His departure comes a year earlier than planned after Crocker came out of retirement in 2011 to take the helm of the embassy at President Barack Obama's personal request. His resignation was announced as the U.S. and its NATO allies forged ahead with plans to close the largely stalemated conflict by the end of 2014 but keep their troops fighting there in the meantime.

With that timetable on track, Crocker's departure from Kabul will not likely herald any new U.S. approach to the conflict. However, the loss of his presence as a trouble-shooter since the 1980s will be felt as the administration struggles to prevent Afghanistan from descending again into the cauldron of extremism that gave sanctuary to Osama bin Laden and leaders of his al-Qaida network.

Crocker's departure comes at a time when the NATO and U.S. civilian efforts in Afghanistan face increasing strain while the military draws down its forces in time for the 2014 end of combat operations.

The U.S. embassy in Kabul confirmed Crocker's departure "with regret" while officials in Washington said he made his plans known to Obama during this weekend's NATO summit in Chicago at which the allies discussed the way forward in Afghanistan.

In Afghanistan for his second tour as America's top U.S. envoy in Kabul ? he reopened the U.S. embassy there in 2002 after the ouster of the Taliban regime ? Crocker was called on to lead a ramp-up in civilian operations similar to one he supervised in Iraq.

In nominating Crocker for the Kabul post, Obama hailed him as "one of our nation's most respected diplomats," who "is no stranger to tough assignments."

Indeed, Crocker was a six-time ambassador, running embassies not only in Iraq and Afghanistan but also in Pakistan, Kuwait, Lebanon and Syria. An Arabic speaker, he held diplomatic posts in Qatar, Iran, Egypt and Lebanon earlier in his career.

As a young officer, he was in Beirut when the U.S. Embassy there was blown up in 1983. His residence in Syria was ransacked by a mob when he was ambassador there in 1998.

Such experiences contributed to Crocker's calm under fire. When a Pakistan-based group allied with the Taliban staged a spectacular attack on the U.S. embassy in Kabul last September ? taking over a nearby building and firing rockets and bullets at the compound during a 20-hour siege ? Crocker was unfazed.

"This really is not a very big deal," he told reporters at the time. "If that's the best they can do, you know, I think it's actually a statement of their weakness."

It is not immediately clear who will replace him, although officials said the most likely candidate is James Cunningham, a former ambassador to Israel and deputy U.N. envoy who is now one of the ex-ambassadors serving under Crocker in Kabul.

Crocker will leave after international donor conferences for Afghanistan are held in Tokyo and Kabul, Nuland said in a statement.

"Ambassador Crocker's tenure has been marked by enormous achievements," she said, listing the successful negotiation of a strategic partnership agreement with Afghanistan and the Chicago summit as highlights.

Perhaps one of the best known ambassadors outside the famously insular diplomatic circuit because of his 2007-2009 stint as U.S. ambassador to Iraq during former President George W. Bush's military "surge" ? a period in which he testified before Congress in nationally televised hearings with his military counterpart Gen. David Petraeus ? Crocker was favored by Republicans and Democrats alike to correct errant policies, clean up messes and begin planning for the drawdown of U.S. forces.

Crocker ran the civilian side of Bush's buildup, overseeing a massive influx of development experts, diplomats and academics throughout the country as it emerged from a brutal and relentless insurgency and fought to improve infrastructure, governance and the rule of law. He and Petraeus laid the groundwork for the eventual withdrawal from Iraq.

After leaving public service following his time in Baghdad, Crocker became dean of Texas A&M University's George Bush School of Government and Public Service. But he was pressed back into duty in Kabul in July 2011 to replace Ambassador Karl Eikenberry, a retired general whose poisonous relationship with Afghan President Hamid Karzai had become untenable.

Sen. John McCain, one of the top Republicans on the Armed Services Committee, told reporters, "Ryan Crocker has served the nation with such distinction and such a long time. I respect his decisions whatever they may be. Obviously I'd like him to stay forever. But he has other understandable priorities."
